How to choose an LED mask
LED masks look alike in photos. The difference is in the spec sheet: which light it emits, how much reaches the skin, what it is made of and who checked that it is safe. This guide explains the five facts worth asking for before buying any mask — ours or any other — and how to read them.
What wavelength should an LED mask have?
Colour is only the visible part. What sets one light apart from another is its wavelength, measured in nanometres (nm), and that is what determines how deep in the skin each light works. The most studied for skincare are red (around 630 – 660 nm) and near-infrared (around 810 – 850 nm); blue (around 415 nm) and amber (around 590 nm) work at the surface. A serious spec sheet publishes the nanometres of each light; among the masks we reviewed, the cheapest only say "7 colours", with no figures.
The Glow Mask: four published wavelengths — 415 nm (blue), 590 nm (amber), 660 nm (red) and 850 nm (near-infrared) — and each of its 122 LEDs emits all four (122 × 4 = 488 chips).
What is irradiance and why does it matter?
Irradiance is how much light each square centimetre of skin receives, in mW/cm². It is the difference between ten minutes of light and ten minutes of a pretty colour. It depends on the power of the LEDs and on the distance to the skin, which is why a flexible mask that moulds to the face delivers light more evenly than a rigid one. If a brand does not publish its irradiance, there is no way to know how much light you are getting.
The Glow Mask: 29 – 40 mW/cm², with three intensity levels (50 %, 75 % and 100 %) and optional pulsed light.
What does FDA 510(k) clearance mean for an LED mask?
510(k) clearance is the process by which the U.S. FDA reviews a device before allowing its sale in that country: electrical, thermal and light safety, among other points. Health Canada has an equivalent process, the medical device licence. CE marking and RoHS compliance cover safety and materials for the European market. None of these reviews promises results; what they say is that someone independent checked the device before you did. An honest spec sheet says "510(k) clearance", the correct term for this process.
The Glow Mask: model reviewed by two independent health authorities — U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance (June 2025) and a Health Canada medical device licence — with CE marking and RoHS compliance. In Mexico it is sold for cosmetic use at home.
What material should touch the skin?
The mask will be in contact with your face for ten or twenty minutes, several times a week. The material should be kind to the skin and flexible, so it moulds and the light reaches forehead, cheeks, contour and chin evenly. Among the masks we reviewed, the cheapest use rigid plastic; others say "silicone" without saying which grade. Ask what the material is and whether it is hypoallergenic.
The Glow Mask: medical-grade, hypoallergenic silicone, soft and flexible; 198 g without the handheld controller; three adjustable straps and eye protectors included.
What warranty and support apply in Mexico?
A mask is used hundreds of times. If something fails one day, what matters is that someone answers in your language and in your country, and that the warranty is valid in Mexico under NOM-024-SCFI-2013 and the Federal Consumer Protection Law. With a seller outside Mexico, a claim usually goes through the marketplace, not the brand.
The Glow Mask: Mexican brand; free shipping across Mexico; 30 days to return it; 12-month warranty valid in Mexico; WhatsApp support in Spanish.
